Salvation Army Befriending Service
Reaching out to serve – into the world of the hurting, broken, lonely, dispossessed and lost – caring, cheering, sharing, and declaring
Following approaches from lonely people within the Bangor community, the Salvation Army Bangor Befriending Service was formally established in the Spring of 2013: what began as a pilot project continues to expand in response to growing demand and positive feedback. We now serve the Newtownards as well as the Bangor area. Our clients are adults – self-referred or referred by local agencies: of all ages; from all backgrounds; of all faiths or none. All need befriending.
We Aim to meet vulnerable people at their point of need; to tackle isolation by providing supportive visits to help meet emotional and spiritual needs and to assure those we visit, by a continuing interest shown in them, that someone cares.
We Offer caring, supportive companionship on a regular and ongoing basis; Sharing of interests, news, etc.; A listening ear; Cheering and encouragement; Signposting to relevant agencies; Pastoral support as appropriate.
Our Befrienders are interviewed, disclosure assessed, trained, and sign an undertaking to adhere fully to all the aims, objectives, ethics, rules, and policies, procedures and standards of the Befriending Service. They normally will visit in pairs. They attend an initial orientation session; are provided with a comprehensive written Guide covering all aspects of the service; are encouraged to contact either Carole (the church leader) or Meta (the Co-ordinator) for support about any concerns they might have; and meet regularly as a team to share experiences, provide mutual support, and undertake further relevant training and updating.
Opportunities We offer volunteering opportunities – if you are interested in joining us as a Befriender, have good listening skills, are cheerful and empathetic; diplomatic and discreet; and keep confidences, we would be pleased to hear from you.
